Human trafficking involves exploitation and can be difficult to recognize. Young people and families benefit from clear, age-appropriate information about unsafe situations, manipulation, boundaries, and ways to ask for help.
People United of Louisiana’s prevention focus is to help youth, families, and community members have informed conversations about safety and support. Education should be respectful and free of blame. A young person who shares a concern should be listened to and connected with appropriate help.
Understanding the Signs and Risks
Trafficking and exploitation can take different forms, and concerning situations may not always be obvious. Education can help young people recognize situations that may put them at risk and understand when it is important to reach out to a trusted adult or appropriate resource.
Education may cover:
- Understanding what exploitation and trafficking can look like.
- Recognizing concerning behavior and unsafe requests.
- Discussing online and in-person safety.
- Identifying trusted adults and ways to ask for help.
- Learning how to connect with specialized community resources.
Helping Youth Know Where to Turn
Knowing who to contact can be just as important as recognizing a warning sign. We encourage young people to identify trusted adults and learn about resources available to them.
